Brattle Consultants to Present at 2013 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting

Brattle principal Ahmad Faruqui and senior associate Pablo Ruiz have been invited to present at the 2013 IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) General Meeting, taking place July 21 – 25, 2013 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The PES General Meeting attracts thousands of professionals from every segment of the electric power and energy industry and features a comprehensive technical program including Super Sessions, panel sessions, tutorials, and technical committee meetings. This year’s theme is “Shaping the Future Energy Industry” and topics will include:

  • Electricity Supply to Rural and Remote Communities

  • Transmission System Efficiency and Reliability Improvements

  • Impacts of Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) Events on Electric Power Systems

  • Innovation and Advancements in Protection, Automation and Control for Evolving Power Systems

  • Generation Mix Strategies: Solving Energy Production Challenges of the 21st Century

Dr. Faruqui will speak on “Using Dynamic Pricing to Integrate Retail and Wholesale Markets for Electricity” in a panel titled “Coordinated Operation of Retail and Wholesale Power Markets.” The panel will discuss how smart grid developments, such as dynamic pricing and distributed generation, are providing tighter linkages between retail and wholesale power markets, despite a relative lack of research into the implications of these linkages for system reliability and efficiency. Dr. Ruiz will participate in a panel discussion on “Transmission System Efficiency and Reliability Improvements,” in which he will discuss “Real-time Market Efficiency Gains through Topology Control Algorithms: Studies of Historical PJM Conditions.”
