Brattle Principals Philip Hanser and Bente Villadsen to Present at SNL Center for Financial Education Power Sector Accounting Course

Brattle principals Philip Hanser and Bente Villadsen will present at the SNL Center for Financial Education’s “Inside Power Sector Accounting” program, taking place October 16-17, 2012 in Charlotte, NC. The program is tailored for accounting professionals new to the industry and those whose jobs require an understanding of how the sector's accounting impacts the business. Mr. Hanser will present two sessions, including “Revenue Sources,” which will review the common customer classes and common utility revenue sources at a utility company. He will also present on “ISO markets, operations and settlements,” during which he will discuss how market prices impact a company’s revenue stream and how companies can comply with the rules on accounting and financial issues related to the various transactions that occur within the ISOs/RTOs and how they differ from region to region. Dr. Villadsen will also lead two sessions, including “Power Plant Accounting,” which will focus on four key areas with regards to plant accounting: utility plant depreciation; capitalization concepts; allowance for funds used during construction (AFUDC); and the implications for deferred taxes. She will also present on how the convergence of IFRS with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) will challenge utilities and what it will likely take to comply with the standards.
