Brattle Economists Contribute to Book on the Smart Grid

Economists from The Brattle Group have contributed two chapters in the book, Smart Grid: Integrating Renewable, Distributed, and Efficient Energy, released in early November.

Edited by Fereidoon P. Sioshansi, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the smart grid industry and explores critical technological, design, and policy issues that must be addressed to ensure the success of the smart grid. The book explains how the smart grid can aid utilities in adhering to increased renewable portfolio standards, and illustrates examples of successful smart metering programs that can be used as a guide for utilities. Brattle principal Ahmad Faruqui, a nationally-recognized expert on the smart grid, authored the chapter, “Efficiency and ethics of dynamic pricing.” Principals Phil Hanser and Judy Chang, associate Kamen Madjarov, and Warren Katzenstein co-authored the chapter, “Riding the wave: The potential of the smart grid for integrating wind resources.” The chapter discusses the need for identifying the right type of consumer for programs that integrate intermittent resources, and addresses how to handle sudden changes in intermittent output.
