Rand Ghayad Co-Authors a Book Chapter in Transforming U.S. Workforce Development Policies for the 21st Century

Brattle associate Rand Ghayad recently contributed a chapter on long-term unemployment (LTU) as part of the newly released book, Transforming U.S. Workforce Development Policies for the 21st Century.

The book, produced in partnership by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and Kansas City, and the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, examines the new realities faced by workers and employers in the United States, and how the Great Recession and other disruptive forces have changed the environment for workers, job seekers, the government, businesses and educational institutions. Transforming U.S. Workforce Development Policies for the 21st Century aims to tackle these employment issues and present new ideas for transformative education and workforce development policies.

Dr. Ghayad, along with his co-authors from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, reported results from several job search support interventions targeted at older workers who have been out of work for a long time. While meaningfully addressing the crisis of long-term unemployment will require a broad array of policy responses, the findings from this study suggest that such responses should include increased funding for job search support campaigns.

Dr. Ghayad is expected to speak on a panel during the official launch of the book at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, DC.

The chapter can be read in its entirety here.
