Consultants Dean Murphy and Mariko Geronimo Present at Nuclear Used Fuel Strategy Conference

Brattle Principal Dean Murphy and Senior Associate Mariko Geronimo presented at the 2nd Annual U.S. Nuclear Used Fuel Strategy Conference, which took place November 21-22, 2013 in Charlotte, NC.

Organized by Nuclear Energy Insider, the conference brought together key stakeholders and leaders from the nuclear industry focusing on ways to develop tailored solutions for extended storage as Centralized Interim Storage (CIS) becomes crucial to used fuel strategies. Program speakers covered critical topics facing the extended storage of used fuel, including regulatory and policy developments, decommissioning insights, funding strategies for CIS and transportation, as well as the challenges of transitioning from an operational plant to an independent spent fuel storage installation (ISFSI).

Dr. Murphy and Ms. Geronimo presented during the session, “Moving from a Pilot Program to a Long-Term Program,” where they discussed the motivations for and benefits of a potential pilot program or centralized dry storage program. Their presentation also examined the cost of engineering a solution, the benefits of minimizing liabilities and litigation, as well as prioritization of a shut down program.
