Mark Berkman to Participate in LSI Conference on Hydraulic Fracturing in California

Brattle principal Mark Berkman will speak at the upcoming conference, “Hydraulic Fracturing in California: Developing Win-Win Strategies for Owners of Surface Rights and Drilling Rights,” taking place on August 12, 2014 in Beverly Hills, CA.

The seminar, presented by Law Seminars International (LSI), will provide up-to-date information on environmental and economic issues in the Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) industry for lawyers, consultants, industry executives, and agency officials. Participants will discuss issues including whether cities and countries can enact local bans in the face of existing state laws governing natural resources; trespassing claims in the event that wastewater crosses property boundaries; the recoverability of damages; and water rights.

Dr. Berkman will participate in a session called “Water Rights: A Background on Pertinent California Water Law and Issues Associated with Securing the Right to Use Water for Hydraulic Fracturing.” He will discuss the energy economics of water in HF and how to calculate the cost of a British Thermal Unit (BTU) per acre-foot of water.
