Onur Aydin Presents on Transmission Expansion at EUCI Conference

Brattle senior associate Onur Aydin recently presented at the EUCI Conference, “Transmission Expansion in the Midwest,” taking place November 9-10, 2015 in Indianapolis, IN.

Challenging and extreme conditions regularly occur on the power system. A more robust and flexible transmission network can help to mitigate the high-cost impacts of those conditions, while also reducing the cost of addressing the unprecedented long-term uncertainties faced by the industry. Today's “conservative” approach to transmission planning exposes customers and other market participants to greater risks and costs because by understating the benefits of and risks addressed by transmission, valuable investments in transmission facilities are either not made or delayed.

Mr. Aydin presented “Transmission as a Market Enabler: The Costs and Risks of an Insufficiently Flexible Electricity Grid,” which covered the findings and conclusions from a recent Brattle study commissioned by the WIRES Group. He discussed the key barriers to planning a more robust transmission grid and provided recommendations for policy makers and regulators to facilitate more effective transmission planning.
