Principal Kevin Neels to Present at Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting

Brattle Principal Kevin Neels will speak at the Transportation Research Board’s 93rd Annual Meeting, taking place January 12-16, 2014 in Washington, DC.

The Annual Meeting covers all forms of transportation and features a wide range of participants, including policy makers, administrators, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions. The theme for this year’s program, “Celebrating Our Legacy, Anticipating Our Future,” will be highlighted throughout several sessions and workshops, and other presentations will focus on critical transportation issues, including performance measurement, automated driving and connected vehicles, extreme weather events, and big data.

Dr. Neels has been selected to present during the session, “Use and Misuse of Cost Data in Simplified Rail Regulatory Proceedings.” The session will examine the simplified procedures for evaluating the reasonableness of railroad rates the Surface Transportation Board has sought to develop and implement in order to make the regulatory oversight and protections within the economic reach of a larger set of rail shippers. Dr. Neels will focus on the economics behind seeking rate relief under these simplified procedures.
