Brattle Consultants Author Article on the Impact of International Financial Reporting Standards on Utilities’ Financial Statements

Brattle principal Bente Villadsen, associate Amit Koshal, and senior research analyst Wyatt Toolson, authored an article published in the December 2010 issue of Public Utilities Fortnightly. The article discusses how International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), which have been adopted by Canada for 2011 and are expected to be adopted in the U.S. in the coming years, will affect the reporting requirements and financial disclosures of regulated companies. According to the article, the financial reporting requirements of IFRS and GAAP differ in some key ways that will have a significant impact on utilities’ financial statements. The authors recommend a number of key issues for regulated entities, regulators, and other stakeholders to consider when addressing the impact of the accounting changes on regulatory policy and practice.
