The Brattle Group is pleased to announce that Eliana Garcés, former Deputy Chief Economist at the European Commission, has joined the firm’s Washington, DC office as a principal.

She previously served in the cabinet of Joaquín Almunia, the Vice-President and Commissioner in charge of Competition Policy at the European Commission. In that position she supervised antitrust and merger investigations in financial services, information technology, telecommunications, and energy markets.

In her role at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Internal Market and Industry, Dr. Garcés provided analyses relevant to policy issues involving economic integration and European industrial competitiveness. She also served as a member of the Competition Chief Economist Team. Dr. Garcés has also held positions in the private sector, including previous economic consulting experience in the United States.

“We are very pleased to welcome Eliana to the firm,” commented Brattle President Alexis Maniatis. “She expands our expertise in competition issues involving platforms and digital markets, and her experience in Europe combined with her presence in Washington, DC strengthens our ability to serve clients on both sides of the Atlantic as one global team.”

From 2016 to 2017, Dr. Garcés was a Visiting Senior Fellow at George Mason University, where she taught and researched regulatory aspects of digital innovation both in the United States and Europe.
