Jeffrey Dorfman

Professor Dorfman is the Hugh C. Kiger Distinguished Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at North Carolina State University and an expert in the economics and management of the food industry.

At North Carolina State University, Professor Dorfman teaches and conducts research and also fills an extension role, assisting growers, industry participants, and policymakers on pricing, marketing, management, and policy issues. He is a fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, where he also served on the Board of Directors, and a former editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics (AJAE). He has received numerous awards for his research and teaching.

Outside of academia, Professor Dorfman has testified or submitted expert reports in matters involving property valuation, local land use ordinances, damages estimation, the economics and operation of the food industry, fair pricing in agricultural commodity markets, and a range of issues involving agribusinesses.

From 2019 to 2023, Professor Dorfman served as the State Fiscal Economist for Georgia, an appointment by Governor Brian P. Kemp. In this role, he was responsible for forecasting for state budgetary purposes, fiscal analysis of proposed legislation, contributing to state bond packages, and meeting with bond rating agencies to maintain the state’s AAA credit rating. He also regularly testified before the Georgia General Assembly on the state of Georgia’s economy and advised the Governor on economic policy and program design.

Prior to that role, Professor Dorfman spent 34 years as a professor of economics at the University of Georgia, where he taught classes on the economics of the food industry, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and food policy. He has written four books, including a textbook on the economics and management of the food industry, and approximately 100 scholarly articles. He was previously a regular columnist for Forbes and RealClearMarkets.com, and frequently provides commentary on television and radio.
