Brattle Principals Coauthor Book Chapter on Market Manipulation Economics Considerations
Principals Dr. Shaun Ledgerwood and Dan Harris coauthored a chapter on “Market Manipulation Economics Considerations” in a book in the EU Energy Law series on market manipulation, insider trading, and the obligation to disclose inside information on wholesale electricity and gas markets in Europe.
The Brattle-authored chapter examines the role of economics in analysing market manipulation. The authors explain how they consider what economists should think about market manipulation and focus on some US case examples. They then discuss ways to use economics (i) to estimate damages, and (ii) to calculate harm, damages, and penalties, and discuss considerations which may be useful in finding an optimal level of trade surveillance and compliance.
