New Brattle Analysis Informs Deployment Opportunities for Advanced Nuclear Technologies
Interest in advanced nuclear power is growing as electricity demand rises and utilities, policymakers, and large energy buyers seek sources of dependable, carbon-free power at scale. Yet moving from interest to deployment requires difficult decisions about technology, cost, financing, timing, and risk.
A new Brattle report examines the landscape for new nuclear development, including private-sector interest and lessons from recent projects. It highlights the key strategic issues, including resource planning and managing cost risk that inform whether and how to pursue new nuclear; explores how reactor design, project sequencing, construction experience, and financing affect costs; and identifies factors to consider in a detailed techno-economic assessment of reactor types.
Drawing on insights from Brattle’s work advising clients, the report, Informing Deployment of New Nuclear Technologies, outlines questions to address before a final investment decision, including options for federal and state support, licensing progress, supply chains, workforce needs, operating performance, safety, and opportunities for local economic development.
The report was developed by Principals Dean Murphy and Sam Newell, Senior Energy Associate Aniruddh Mohan, and Energy Associate Peter Heller.
