Principal Dr. Dean Murphy was quoted in a recent RTO Insider article that discusses the impact of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) decision to build a small modular reactor (SMR).

Like OPG, many industry experts are focused on SMRs for this next wave of nuclear development. Dr. Murphy said, “Nuclear is a really promising technology, including SMRs, really for the second half of this century. I think that’s how long it’s going to take to get a couple of times through this technology cycle before you can start building them in volumes that are enough to make a difference.” He also noted that, while the many design teams currently developing North American SMR projects will not all be successful, there can be shared learnings across the different design concepts, such as how to build a pump to withstand extreme temperatures.
