Financial Regulation Expert Alexei Orlov Joins The Brattle Group as Senior Associate
The Brattle Group has welcomed Dr. Alexei Orlov to its Washington, DC office as a Senior Associate in the firm’s Credit, Derivatives & Structured Products, Financial Services & Markets, and Regulatory Investigations & Enforcement practices. A former economist with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Dr. Orlov specializes in financial regulation matters in both securities and derivative markets.
With 25 years of experience spanning academia and regulatory agencies, Dr. Orlov has worked with a broad range of market participants – including dealers, hedge funds, and investors – across equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, and commodities markets. His expertise includes the regulation of derivatives markets, asset pricing, market microstructure, market surveillance, econometrics, and data governance and analysis. As a Supervisory Research Economist at the CFTC, he oversaw derivatives markets research and analytics projects, with a particular focus on futures and swaps; provided regulatory advice, and represented the CFTC in inter-agency and international working groups.

In addition to his tenure at the CFTC, Dr. Orlov previously worked as a Financial Economist at the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Data Science and as a detailee to the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). He spent 15 years as a professor of economics – teaching a variety of undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA courses – at Radford University and as a visiting professor at Virginia Tech, Babson College, and American University in Bulgaria, and his research has been published in numerous academic journals.
