Associate Dr. Matthias van den Heuvel Coauthors Article on Impact of Certification and Cash Prizes from Venture Competitions on Startups
Published in Small Business Economics
In a new article published in Small Business Economics, Brattle Associate Dr. Matthias van den Heuvel and his coauthor examine how certification and cash prizes from venture competitions impact startups’ performance.
Using original data on about 1,000 startups that participated in a leading Swiss venture competition, Dr. van den Heuvel and his coauthor find that, although winning the competition improves startups’ business success on average, the effects of certification and cash prizes differ. Certification has a long-term positive effect on startups whose quality can be reliably assessed by the competition’s judges, while the cash prize only has a short-term impact on startups with low running costs.
