Brattle Experts Release Report on the Drivers of Pennsylvania’s Electricity Price Increases
In a new report, Recent Electricity Price Trends and Drivers in Pennsylvania, Brattle experts examine the factors behind Pennsylvania’s 41% increase in electricity prices between 2021 and 2025. Prepared for the Solar and Storage Industries Institute (SI2), the analysis finds that rising natural gas prices and the increasing cost of building new power plants were the primary drivers of higher electricity rates over the study period.
Drawing on publicly available data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), and other sources, the report provides an evidence-based assessment of recent price trends to help inform energy policy and affordability discussions in Pennsylvania. The report examines the roles of transmission and distribution investments, renewable energy, data centers, and other factors affecting electricity prices, and concludes that residential customers experienced disproportionately larger price increases than businesses over the period analyzed.
