RTO Insider features Brattle Principal Johannes Pfeifenberger discussing the findings and recommendations from his recently coauthored report on large-load demand and modern transmission planning frameworks.
The report, published by the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) Large Load Task Force, offers practical recommendations to help planners, utilities, regional transmission organizations (RTOs), and regulators modernize transmission planning processes.
“Things we’re doing now to interconnect new load have implications for what our longer-term options are, because if we make a certain investment now, that certain investment may not be the right investment that we should have made from a long-term perspective,” says Mr. Pfeifenberger. “We need to plan even in the near term explicitly for that uncertainty, and the way to do that is to really plan for recognizing that we don’t know what the future is.”
