Energy Research Associate Kate Peters recently presented at the V2G Business, Policy, and Technology Forum, “Addressing Challenges, Achieving the Potential of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G).” Ms. Peters joined the “Compensation Mechanisms for Customers” panel, which explored issues surrounding compensation mechanisms and potential strategies for successful V2G participation across customer, grid operator, and other stakeholder perspectives.

The panelists debated existing and new approaches to compensation mechanisms based on their effectiveness in attracting customer participation, scaling with enrollment, and providing cost-reflective and simple incentives. Ms. Peters gave a presentation illustrating the grid services that managed electric vehicle charging (particularly V2G) can provide, such as reduced hourly operational costs, avoided transmission and distribution (T&D) investments, and lowered emissions. Not all these value streams are directly monetizable today, but customers should be compensated if providing grid services.

Ms. Peters’ presentation, “Vehicle-to-Grid Compensation Mechanisms for Customers,” is available below.
