Brattle Principal Coleman Bazelon and Senior Advisor David Sappington Sign Letter to President Obama in Support of Spectrum Auction Legislation
Brattle principal Coleman Bazelon and senior advisor David Sappington were among more than 100 economists that specialize in telecommunications who recently signed a letter to President Barack Obama in support of congressional legislation in spectrum policy.
The letter endorses legislation that would provide the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with the authority to run spectrum “incentive auctions.” These auctions would allow the FCC to distribute a portion of auction proceeds to licensees who voluntarily give up their license rights. Dr. Bazelon, an expert in regulation and strategy in the communications sector, and Professor Sappington, a former chief economist at the FCC, agree that the proposed auctions would allow for increased spectrum efficiency in the United States.
