During the next 100 years, the world’s electricity systems will almost certainly transition to a high degree of reliance on renewable energy generation resources. Over 29 states currently have renewable portfolio standards (RPSs), requiring utilities to purchase a total of approximately 60,000 MW of renewable energy by the year 2025. The Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration projects that an additional 54,000 MW of renewable generation will be added to the US grid by 2035.
