In United States v. Donald Blakstad, a 2021 federal criminal trial in the Southern District of New York involving allegations of insider trading in Illumina securities, Dr. Jan Jindra provided testimony on behalf of the US Department of Justice prior to joining Brattle. He explained foundational securities-trading concepts, including call and put options, how options derive value from stock-price movements, and hedging as a risk-management strategy. He also testified about price movements around Illumina earnings announcements, the flow of money among accounts used to trade Illumina securities, profits realized around those announcements, and blue sheet data showing where the defendant’s trades were executed.

Brattle was separately retained by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York to analyze financial records and trace funds connected to the alleged schemes. Principal Paul Hinton testified as a summary witness regarding the flow of funds through accounts controlled by Mr. Blakstad, including the use of insider trading proceeds and the alleged misappropriation of investor funds. A jury ultimately convicted Mr. Blakstad on all seven counts.
