Data Analysis in Hazardous Waste Disposal Compliance Investigation

In United States of America v. Stericycle, an investigation into potential violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) by waste management company Stericycle, Brattle helped the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) and the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Brattle team synthesized and analyzed multiple large datasets from Stericycle to help investigators assess the scale and scope of Stericycle’s RCRA violations.

In January 2025, SDNY announced a $9.5 million settlement with Stericycle, one of the largest civil penalties ever paid for RCRA violations.
