Zillow-Redfin Antitrust Matter
Brattle supported the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the States of Connecticut, New York, and Washington (“the states”), in their antitrust case challenging agreements between Zillow and Redfin in the multifamily rental internet listing services market, providing economic analyses and supporting expert Jeremy Verlinda. The Brattle team assisted in formulating a model of the rental ILS market and estimating the actual and prospective effects of the Zillow-Redfin agreements. In addition, the team performed analyses relevant to determining the relevant antitrust market and assessing the impact of indirect network effects on the competitive impacts of the agreements.
In August 2026, the FTC and the states announced a proposed order resolving the litigation and requiring Redfin to reenter the market, with the goal of restoring competition, driving down costs, and spurring innovation for renters and property management companies. The order has been approved by the court.
